Our journey
Greeks of Diaspora have for many centuries lived and loved outside the borders of their beloved Greece. Nothing has changed and today there are at least six million of them somewhere on this planet away from their mother country.
Whether they live happily or not by enlarge they carry with them the spirit and longing of their return. In reality some of them may never return, and they know it full well, however Ithaca will always remain woven within their soul always anticipating their coming with every turn of the year, the month, the week.
But these days Diasporic Greeks are mostly disappointed upon their return. Ithaca is not what they expected. It cannot offer them anything further. It is only expecting from them, with an unsatisfied urge to take everything, even those wonderful youthful memories. As a result they will finally decide that Ithaca they can take away with them wherever they are, and they will certainly take it to the next world. Hence Diasporic Greeks turn to Cavafy…
Cavafy is such a man, a Greek of Diaspora who never returned but carried his Ithaca with him always. Here we have the evidence of this great writer’s talent in a recital by another great man Sean Connery to the beautiful music of one more great artist, Vangelis.
Enjoy…
